Heritage & Lineage

The Chronomètre à Résonance was officially launched in 2000 as the world’s first wristwatch to harness the physical phenomenon of resonance. Drawing on principles observed by 18th-century horologist Antide Janvier and later by Abraham-Louis Breguet, F.P. Journe adapted the concept for the wrist by placing two balance wheels in close proximity so their mutual vibrations gradually synchronise, producing a more consistent rate than a conventional single-escapement movement.

The Geneva-based manufacture was founded in 1999, the same year the Pre-Production examples were cased. Over the past quarter-century, the Chronomètre à Résonance has become one of the definitive creations of contemporary independent watchmaking, its dual-balance architecture unchanged in principle from that first commercially delivered piece.

Why Chronomètre à Résonance 022/99R Matters

The numbers on the caseback carry precise meaning. Watches 001 through 020 were reserved for the original supporters of Journe’s Tourbillon Souverain Souscription, whose deposits helped capitalise the young manufacture. Serial 021 was retained by Journe himself as a presentation piece for clients and retailers. That arithmetic leaves 022 as the first number released into commercial hands, making this watch the point at which the Résonance became publicly available.

The original owner, who acquired the piece directly in 1999, chose serial number 022 because it matched his date of birth. Phillips in Association with Bacs & Russo has tracked the rise of F.P. Journe at auction more closely than any other house. The 2026 Spring Season produced three landmark Chronomètre à Résonance results: Souscription No. 007 at US$13.9 million, Souscription No. 18 at US$6.3 million, and the Pisa limited edition at US$3 million. Each result reflected a different dimension of rarity within the same reference. The 022/99R occupies a position none of those earlier lots could claim: it is the earliest commercially numbered example of the reference, offered fresh from its first and only owner. For collectors active in the Gulf region, where appetite for historically significant independent watchmaking has grown markedly, this lot at Watches and Wonders-era prices now seems modest context. Early collector markers present on this example include shallow caseback engravings, a brass movement, and the exceptionally rare shiny pink gold dial with silver-toned subdials.
