UR-150 Golden Scorpion: Yellow Gold Meets Kinetic Architecture

URWERK UR-150 Golden Scorpion: 25-piece yellow gold limited edition with UR-50.01 calibre, retrograde minutes and satellite hours. Available in the Middle East.

Signature Features

  • 2N yellow gold — applied to the case middle, crown and surfaces in three distinct finishes — is the material at the centre of this 25-piece limited edition, priced at CHF 105,000 excluding taxes.
  • Three aluminium satellite hours rotate on a brass flying carousel, while a retrograde hand sweeps a 240-degree arc before snapping back in one hundredth of a second.
  • The UR-50.01 self-winding calibre, with 38 jewels, beats at 4 Hz and stores 43 hours of power reserve.
  • A cam-and-rack system paired with a speed regulator — more commonly seen in minute repeaters — replaces the conventional Maltese cross, synchronising satellites and retrograde hand.

Case, Setting and Finishing

The 2N yellow gold case middle measures 42.50 mm wide by 51.00 mm long and 14.80 mm thick. URWERK applies three surface treatments across it — sandblasting, microbead-blasting and satin-finishing — so the same metal absorbs and returns light differently depending on the angle of view. The crown follows the same regime. The caseback, by contrast, is Grade 5 titanium with a black PVD coating, grounding the precious exterior in URWERK’s characteristic industrial material palette.

Martin Frei, Chief Designer and co-founder of URWERK, describes the optical intention directly: “On the Golden Scorpion, yellow gold behaves almost like an optical material. It reveals certain lines, makes others disappear and constantly renews the perception of the watch.” The case is domed with sapphire crystal and pressure-tested to 5 ATM with a screw-down crown.

Dial and Stone Artistry

The satellite hours display uses aluminium satellites on a brass flying carousel, finely sandblasted and microbead-blasted, then coated in 3N gold PVD. The retrograde hand is aluminium, sandblasted and satin-finished. Hour and minute markers, the flying carousel and the counterweight are all hand-painted with Super-LumiNova. The brass rotor echoes the carousel treatment: sandblasted, circular-grained, 3N gold PVD.

The wheels are manufactured using LIGA technology — a precision electroforming process suited to extremely fine geometries. Grade 5 titanium screw heads are flat-polished throughout. On the wrist, the interplay between the gold case surfaces and the moving display creates what Felix Baumgartner, master watchmaker and co-founder, calls “a strong, almost aggressive personality” that the Golden Scorpion name openly signals.

Movement and Material Engineering

The UR-50.01 calibre is the technical spine of the Golden Scorpion. Beating at 28,800 vibrations per hour, it delivers 43 hours of power reserve and choreographs the satellite hours display through a cam-and-rack system that draws on speed-regulator architecture from minute-repeater construction. The conventional Maltese cross is absent entirely. The system keeps the satellite rotation and the retrograde hand’s lightning return in permanent mechanical tension.

URWERK, founded in 1997 by Baumgartner and Frei, produces approximately 200 watches annually. The UR-150 Golden Scorpion is limited to 25 pieces and is supplied on an adjustable high-performance hybrid rubber strap with a folding clasp. For full technical documentation, visit URWERK directly.

Frequently Asked Questions

What movement powers the URWERK UR-150 Golden Scorpion?

The UR-150 Golden Scorpion is driven by the UR-50.01 self-winding calibre, which beats at 4 Hz (28,800 vph), carries 38 jewels and delivers a 43-hour power reserve. A cam-and-rack system with a speed regulator — more commonly associated with minute repeaters — replaces a conventional Maltese cross mechanism to synchronise the satellite display and retrograde hand.

How many pieces of the URWERK UR-150 Golden Scorpion will be made?

URWERK limits the UR-150 Golden Scorpion to 25 pieces worldwide, priced at CHF 105,000 excluding taxes.

What case material is used for the UR-150 Golden Scorpion?

The case middle is 2N yellow gold, finished with a combination of sandblasting, microbead-blasting and satin-finishing. The caseback is Grade 5 titanium with a black PVD coating.

Is the URWERK UR-150 Golden Scorpion available to buy in the Middle East?

The UR-150 Golden Scorpion is available on request from URWERK or an authorised retailer in the Middle East. With only 25 pieces produced, prospective buyers are advised to contact the maison directly through urwerk.com.

What makes the UR-150 Golden Scorpion different from the standard UR-150?

The Golden Scorpion edition clothes the UR-150 architecture entirely in 2N yellow gold, replacing the more industrial character of earlier variants with a sculptural quality. The gold surfaces capture and intensify light across the case's sweeping curves, while the UR-50.01 movement, satellite display and retrograde minutes mechanism remain unchanged.
