The Speedmaster 38 Moves Closer to the Moonwatch

The smaller Speedmaster has moved closer to the Moonwatch. Seven new Speedmaster 38 references bring back round subdials, a cleaner dial and a five-link bracelet, and Dubai was among the first places to see them, at an exhibition that traced almost seventy years of Speedmaster history inside the OMEGA boutique at The Dubai Mall.

Key Highlights

  • OMEGA has renewed the Speedmaster 38 with seven references: three in steel, two in steel and gold, and two in steel set with diamonds.
  • Round subdials replace the previous oval layout, bringing the 38 mm case closer to the original Speedmaster; the bracelet gains a comfort adjustment system.
  • Six references with a date run on the Co-Axial Calibre 3330; the black-dial, no-date version runs on the Calibre 3332. Both are certified chronometers with 52 hours of power reserve.
  • On OMEGA’s Swiss website, prices run from CHF 5,500 to CHF 11,000. OMEGA does not publish prices online for the UAE.

What Changed on the Speedmaster 38

Introduced as the compact companion to the Moonwatch, the Speedmaster 38 had developed its own vocabulary over the years, with oval subdials. The new generation returns to the source. In OMEGA’s own words, round subdials “bring the aesthetic closer to the original Speedmaster”, and the dial carries less text for a cleaner reading. The redesigned bracelet adds a comfort adjustment system, so the fit can be fine-tuned on the wrist, a detail that matters in the warmth of a Gulf summer. Every reference keeps a 38 mm case, a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal and water resistance to 100 metres. For the full story of the watch that inspired it, our guide to the OMEGA Speedmaster Moonwatch retraces its journey to the Moon.

Raynald Aeschlimann, President and CEO of OMEGA, summed up the brief to WatchPro: “The Speedmaster 38 mm has always taken its cues from the Moonwatch, while keeping size, colour, and simplicity in mind.”

Both movements are self-winding chronographs with a column wheel and OMEGA’s Co-Axial escapement, a free-sprung balance with a silicon balance spring, a frequency of 4 Hz and 52 hours of power reserve. The Calibre 3332 drives the only reference without a date window, the black dial, which reads as the most direct echo of the Moonwatch.

First Seen in Dubai

On 9 September, OMEGA opened an immersive Speedmaster exhibition at its boutique in The Dubai Mall, as reported by WatchPro. Rather than a simple timeline, it gathered many of the collection’s defining models, from the precision chronograph conceived for life on Earth to the watch of the Apollo missions, showing how case and dial evolved while the visual codes stayed intact. The opening evening ended with a first look at the seven new Speedmaster 38 references. Visits to the exhibition were offered by appointment through 31 October, booked through an appointment page run by Rivoli Group.

Where to Buy in the UAE

OMEGA does not display UAE prices on its website; the figures above are the official Swiss retail prices and serve as a reference. In Dubai, the new references were first presented at the OMEGA boutique in The Dubai Mall. Readers in Saudi Arabia will find the brand’s main collections and riyal prices in our guide to OMEGA watches in Saudi Arabia.
