Origins of the Material
Frozen Carbon grew from a question Maurice Lacroix posed after the AIKON-IC’s 2025 carbon UD dial: could the raw structure of a carbon composite itself become the decoration, rather than a uniform surface? A specialist supplier in the region answered by developing a process in which bronze or titanium powders, or coloured pigments, are distributed manually and deliberately unevenly through a carbon-fibre matrix before compression at one tonne and curing above 130 °C. For the coloured Frozen Carbon variants, shorter 6 mm fibres are suspended in pigmented epoxy resin instead. Light refracts differently depending on fibre orientation and depth, producing the frosted, mineral-like surface that gives the material its name. The brand traces the lineage of this work to the broader AIKON-IC concept, which it formally launched in 2025 to bring what it calls Innovative Craftsmanship into an accessible price tier.
The Making: Cases and Calibre
Each case material in the collection carries its own character. The Bronze edition pairs a living metal that will develop a personal patina with a black ceramic bezel and a titanium case back. The Damas edition uses DS95X™ Austenitic Damascus steel, sourced from a Swedish blacksmith: acid treatment after machining reveals concentric layering across each of the 500 cases. The Deep Forest variant opts for sand-blasted titanium with a black DLC coating and a green ceramic bezel, keeping the watch light on the wrist. The three open editions use stainless steel with a black ceramic bezel.
Powering all six is the ML1000 calibre, co-developed with Soprod, whose facility sits fewer than ten kilometres from Maurice Lacroix’s Franches-Montagnes manufacture. The movement runs at 28,800 vph, holds approximately 60 hours of power reserve, and is adjusted to plus or minus 4 seconds per day. Through the sapphire case back, the skeletonised oscillating weight, finished with Côtes de Genève and sunray decoration, is fully visible.
