The Story Behind It

Three names anchor this project: TAG Heuer, Team Ikuzawa, and Bamford Watch Department. The first collaboration, released in 2023, established the creative framework. This second edition goes deeper, drawing on a specific object from TAG Heuer’s archive: the Heuer Roadmaster stopwatch, a timing instrument defined by bold graphics and high legibility, central to the brand’s identity on circuit.

Mai Ikuzawa, Team Principal and Creative Director of Team Ikuzawa, studied at Central Saint Martins and has spent over two decades bridging fashion, art and design with an instinctive grasp of motorsport culture. Founded in 1981, Team Ikuzawa is among Japan’s most distinctive racing names, and under her direction it has evolved into a cultural platform with reach well beyond the paddock.

George Bamford, whose Bamford Watch Department is built on the precise reinterpretation of canonical watch designs, worked closely with Ikuzawa to translate the team’s visual identity into a wearable object. The caseback carries dedicated engravings for both collaborators alongside each piece’s individual number out of 150.

Design & Mechanics

The 39 mm bezel-free case in fine brushed and polished steel frames a domed glassbox sapphire crystal with double anti-reflective treatment, an architecture that creates an unobstructed view of the dial. The crown at three o’clock carries a red lacquered ring; the push-pieces at two and four o’clock are finished to match. Water resistance is rated to 100 metres.

Inside, the TH20-10 manufacture chronograph calibre drives the piece. A deliberate configuration choice: the running seconds sub-dial is absent, leaving six o’clock clear for the Team Ikuzawa signature. This omission mirrors the practice of 1960s and 1970s TAG Heuer chronographs, where dial space was routinely allocated to racing teams and partners rather than additional complications.

The white Clou de Paris dial carries printed rather than applied indexes, reinforcing the flat, graphic character the Roadmaster reference suggested. Red lacquered hour and minute hands, a red central chronograph seconds hand, and a red date disc at six o’clock build a chromatic consistency directly lifted from Team Ikuzawa’s livery. The black flange with its crisp white minute track completes the circuit aesthetic.

On the Wrist

Each watch arrives with three strap options. The primary configuration is a seven-row steel bracelet with alternating brushed and polished links and a double folding clasp bearing the TAG Heuer shield. A perforated white leather strap with red stitching and lining takes its cue from classic racing gloves. The third option, a red-and-white textile strap, maps directly to Team Ikuzawa’s historic racing livery.

Packaging follows the same logic: the set arrives in a box inspired by the toolboxes found inside racing workshops, accompanied by a travel pouch and a set of custom Team Ikuzawa charms for keys and personal accessories. The presentation is part of the object, not an afterthought.

Where It Sits in the Collection

The Carrera is TAG Heuer’s longest-standing chronograph line, conceived by Jack Heuer in 1963 and produced continuously since. Within that lineage, the 39 mm Glassbox format occupies a precise position: it is the variant most directly connected to the brand’s vintage timing instrument aesthetic, the construction that removes the bezel to bring the dial forward.

At CHF 9,900, the Team Ikuzawa edition sits at the collector tier of the Carrera range, priced to reflect both the manufacture calibre and the 150-piece ceiling. For GCC collectors who follow limited-edition sports chronographs, the combination of a stated edition size, three named collaborators and a specific archival reference gives this piece a clear position in the secondary market landscape.
