A New Chapter for the Ripples Collection

Speake Marin expands its Ripples family with the Ripples Kármán Line, an ultra-thin 904L steel sports watch that links contemporary design to high horology. First launched in 2022 as the Maison’s full stainless-steel line, Ripples now evokes the boundary where Earth’s atmosphere yields to space through metal, light and slim proportions.

The Geneva-based independent Maison combines traditional craft with a modern silhouette suited to daily wear, echoing the fading of deep blue sky into space on the wrist.

904L Steel Architecture and Ultra-Thin Comfort

The Kármán Line uses 904L stainless steel for corrosion resistance and a bright polish, sharing its construction philosophy with the Ripples Skeleton. The “La City” case by Stéphane Lacroix combines circular and square geometries with alternating polished and satin-finished surfaces.

At 40.30 mm in diameter and 6.30 mm thick, the case slips under a cuff while retaining presence, and offers 5 ATM water resistance, a screw-down crown, screw-down case back and sapphire crystals with anti-reflective coating on both sides.

An integrated three-row 904L steel bracelet with polished and brushed finishes and a personalised folding clasp offers micro-adjustment of up to 4 mm. Two additional straps accompany the watch: a smooth leather option with a blue gradient and “Winston in Space” illustration, and a dark blue rubber strap with textile pattern, sky-blue inner lining and titanium pin buckle.

A Sapphire Dial Between Blue and Infinity

For the first time within the Ripples collection, Speake Marin turns to a sapphire crystal dial that brings transparency and depth. The sapphire base receives blue metallisation and Geneva stripes with a sunray finish on its reverse, allowing the movement to appear beneath the surface.

At 1:30, the emblematic small seconds appears in a soleil-finished subdial framed by a rhodium-plated ring formed directly on sapphire, with applied rhodium-plated baton indices and a mirror-polished steel hand. Rhodium-plated hour and minute hands include a heart-shaped hour hand recalling the brand’s British roots.

The minute flange uses an under-set snap-fit to avoid glue while ensuring stability. Its opal microbeaded surface treated with blue PVD creates a two-level effect, with white minute markers and the Speake Marin Genève logo completing the composition.

In-House SMA06: High-Frequency Micro-Rotor Engineering

The ultra-thin SMA06 automatic calibre measures 32.00 mm in diameter and 2.5 mm thick without hands. Developed at “Le Cercle des Horlogers” in La Chaux-de-Fonds, it operates at 5 Hz (36,000 vibrations per hour) with a minimum 52-hour power reserve.

An in-house crafted wheel prescures the rotation of the reversers during manual winding, while the two reversers rotate in a single direction to optimise the winding of the integrated tungsten micro-rotor, a solution first introduced in the Ripples Skeleton.

Through the sapphire case back, Côtes de Genève, anglage with bevelled and hand-polished edges, cerclage and micro-beading are visible, together with a Swiss lever escapement, variable inertia balance and 27 jewels. The SMA06 follows a series of 13 in-house movements, including the ultra-thin SMA07 skeleton calibre with integrated micro-rotor and 36,000 vph balance.

Why It Matters

For collectors in the GCC, the Ripples Kármán Line unites an ultra-thin high-frequency micro-rotor movement, a luminous sapphire dial and a versatile 904L steel architecture that moves easily from formal to relaxed settings. The combination of proprietary calibre development, refined finishing and multiple strap options will appeal to those who expect mechanical depth and contemporary design from an independent Geneva Maison.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes the Speake Marin Ripples Kármán Line ultra-thin?

The watch features an ultra-thin SMA06 automatic calibre measuring just 2.5 mm thick without hands, combined with a case that is only 6.30 mm thick. This slim profile allows it to slip comfortably under a cuff while maintaining presence on the wrist.

What is unique about the sapphire dial on the Ripples Kármán Line?

For the first time in the Ripples collection, Speake Marin uses a sapphire crystal dial with blue metallisation and Geneva stripes. The sapphire base allows the movement to be visible beneath the surface, creating transparency and depth that emphasizes the watch’s in-house engineering.

How long does the SMA06 movement power reserve last?

The in-house SMA06 calibre offers a minimum 52-hour power reserve and operates at 5 Hz with 36,000 vibrations per hour. It features an integrated tungsten micro-rotor that optimises the automatic winding mechanism.
