Design & Lineage
Reference 1832, announced in 1976, was the work of an artist who, according to Evelyne Genta, never truly considered himself a watch designer. Gérald Genta approached the Ingenieur SL as a single sculptural object: one continuous form in which case, bracelet and clasp dissolved into each other. The fully integrated stainless steel bracelet was central to that concept, at a moment when stainless steel carried no prestige in luxury watchmaking. Fifty years later, both references IW328910 and IW324909 return to that source, their uniquely brushed dials tracing back to a specific historic variant from that decade.
The Genta Family’s Perspective
Evelyne and Alexia Genta were not brought in for a ceremonial endorsement. IWC shared prototypes of the Ingenieur Automatic 40 with them during development, well before the 2023 relaunch. Their presence at the IWC booth returned in 2026 when the expanded collection arrived, including the tourbillon reference. In the video interview released on 15 September 2026, they offer previously untold accounts of life alongside one of watchmaking’s most consequential designers: his obsessive pursuit of proportion, harmony in everyday objects, the personal discipline that shaped his output.
“The Ingenieur began life as a technical watch, but it was transformed through the creative eye of an artist. Gérald would be incredibly happy to see how IWC has respected and preserved the DNA of his original design,” said Evelyne Genta.
