The Story Behind It

Astronomy runs through Louis Moinet’s founding logic: the historical watchmaker Louis Moinet created the first chronograph for celestial observations. Nathanaël Schaller, Creative Director of Les Ateliers Louis Moinet, describes the Moon Meteor as a continuation of that lineage filtered through his own biography. His father collected meteorites; that private obsession now sits, literally, on the dial of twelve watches.

The choice of twelve pieces echoes the Moon’s own twelve-month cycle, a figure that feels considered rather than arbitrary given the subject matter.

Dial and Materials

Each dial is painted by hand under a binocular microscope using a brush carrying only a few hairs. Successive layers of lacquer, varnish, and luminescent pigment build the nebula scene. Every stage is assessed in darkness as well as daylight, so the nocturnal reveal is as considered as the daytime composition.

Three meteorite fragments sit within the dial itself: NWA 13925, a genuine piece of Mars priced above gold and platinum per gram; Jbilet Winselwan, which contains amino acids; and Sahara 97093, an EH3 enstatite meteorite bearing interstellar microdiamonds. The flange is formed from Muonionalusta, one of the oldest meteorites found on Earth, its Widmanstätten crystalline patterns visible to the naked eye. Hour markers and graduations are laser-engraved into its surface for legibility.

For the lunar disc, Gadamis 005 — described by specialists as among the most beautiful lunar meteorites for its marbled grey-and-white texture, from a region explored by the Apollo 16 crew — represents the full moon. Dhofar 457, intensely black from its crater formation, represents the new moon.

On the Wrist

At 18 grams, the Moon Meteor disappears on the wrist. The grade 5 titanium case, polished and satin-finished, carries openworked lugs that integrate the Louisiana alligator strap without visual interruption. The crown is set with the fleur-de-lys, the emblem of Les Ateliers Louis Moinet. By night, the dial transforms: craters on the lunar disc become visible, the nebula glows, and the astronaut appliqué continues its slow rotation above the Moon’s surface.

For collectors in the Gulf with an appetite for genuine horological rarity, the Moon Meteor occupies a specific position: twelve pieces at an unspecified price, with material provenance that is publicly verifiable and scientifically named.
