ATELIER WEN

Atelier Wen was founded in 2018 by two Frenchmen, Robin Tallendier and Wilfried Buiron, who met as students and share a long attachment to Chinese culture. Their proposition was one the industry had avoided: a Chinese watch presented as Chinese, made to a standard that invites comparison with Switzerland. Everything from movement to dial is produced in China, and the brand says so on the dial rather than obscuring it.

Perception and the Guilloché Dial

The Perception collection, launched in 2022, is built around hand-guilloché dials cut by the artisan known as Master Cheng, an integrated steel case with sharply defined finishing, and a movement supplied and modified from Chinese manufacture. The specification — hand-decorated dial, adjusted calibre, finishing at this price — is what forced a reassessment among collectors accustomed to dismissing Chinese production outright.

Making the Origin the Point

Atelier Wen draws its design language from Chinese cultural references rather than European ones, and credits its Chinese suppliers and craftspeople by name. That transparency is the brand’s central editorial position as much as a commercial choice. It has opened a wider trade conversation about where fine watchmaking is permitted to come from.
