Origins in Stone and Signature

Stone dials have a documented place in Gerald Charles history, rooted in the working methods of founder Gérald Charles Genta, whose appetite for unpredictable materials was a defining characteristic. The Masterlink Gem Set Stone Dial does not treat natural stone as decorative shorthand. It treats it as a primary material with its own structural demands. The three minerals selected for this collection each originate from a different continent: aventurine from Brazil, spectrolite from Finland, and iron eye from South Africa.

Spectrolite is a rare variety of labradorite; its signature colour play, known as labradorescence, comes from ultra-fine internal layers that refract light rather than from any pigment. Cutting the dial to the correct orientation is critical — shift the angle by even a fraction, and the optical effect disappears entirely. Aventurine derives its shimmer from microscopic mineral inclusions within a dense, stable quartz structure, shifting between quiet depth and sudden brilliance. Iron eye, formed from iron- and silica-rich deposits compressed over nearly 2.5 billion years, presents three different mineral densities within a single surface: hematite, jasper, and tiger’s eye in one cross-section.

The Making: Attrition as Method

To produce 50 finished dials, the atelier begins with 150 selected stone blanks. Each block is first sliced into 5 mm sections to reveal its internal tone, impurities, and usable zones — no two cuts yield the same result. From there, hand-polishing reduces the stone to 1 mm, then to 0.55 mm, thinner than a credit card, in a shape that has no straight edges to simplify the work.

“Gérald was never afraid of a material that couldn’t be controlled — stone excited him precisely because every piece had a mind of its own,” says Federico Ziviani, CEO of Gerald Charles. “With the Masterlink Gem Set Stone Dial, we’ve brought that same spirit into a case he never had the chance to design for.”

The Masterlink’s asymmetrical form compounds the difficulty. Where a conventional round dial permits a straight geometric cut, the Masterlink demands that the stone follow the case’s sculptural “smile” at 6 o’clock. Losses during machining alone reach as high as 65%. Roughly one dial in ten is lost at the polishing stage. Every piece that survives this process takes more than 24 hours from raw mineral to finished component, assembled by hand to avoid a single scratch.

The Result: Thirty Unrepeatable Timepieces

The case itself is 38 mm x 38 mm in medical-grade stainless steel, with polished and satin-brushed finishes across 31 components. The white gold bezel carries 60 baguette-cut stones, coloured to complement each mineral dial: blue sapphires for the Spectrolite, red sapphires for the Iron Eye, and tsavorites for the Aventurine. Inside, the GCA 1000 manufacture movement runs at 3 Hz with Côtes de Genève and circular-graining bridge finishing. Total case thickness is 7.99 mm. Water resistance is rated to 10 ATM.

The in-house bracelet is offered in three lengths (157 mm, 205 mm, and 222 mm), with micro-link adjustment and a folding clasp engraved with the GC monogram. The open caseback frames the movement in sapphire crystal. This architecture is consistent with the broader Masterlink Gem-Set Limited Edition collection and the earlier Masterlink Boutique Edition, both of which establish the case format’s credentials across gem-set configurations.
