Key Highlights

  • First SR_A signature model to house Hublot’s in-house HUB1280 Unico flyback chronograph calibre.
  • Limited to 200 pieces in a 42mm satin-finished and polished black ceramic case.
  • New black structured honeycomb rubber strap developed specifically for this reference.
  • Matte black skeleton dial revealing the column wheel and open chronograph architecture.
  • Approximate 72-hour power reserve, 100m water resistance and a black ceramic and black-plated titanium deployant clasp.

Hublot and British designer Samuel Ross MBE extend their collaboration with the Big Bang Unico SR_A, the first SR_A watch to be powered by the Manufacture’s Unico chronograph movement. Presented in Milan and limited to 200 pieces, it translates Ross’s industrial, architectural vocabulary into a more widely available expression within Hublot’s emblematic chronograph line.

Monochrome and technical, the Big Bang Unico SR_A combines a 42mm black ceramic case, a newly developed honeycomb rubber strap and the HUB1280 Unico calibre. Earlier SR_A pieces explored sculptural tourbillon constructions in smaller runs; this reference broadens the collaboration, aligning it more closely with the wider Big Bang collection while preserving the distinctive SR_A identity.

SR_A design meets Unico engineering

The Big Bang Unico SR_A marks a new stage in a partnership that began in 2019, when Ross received the Hublot Design Prize. Since 2020, the designer and the Manufacture have developed three SR_A tourbillon editions defined by structural forms, engineered surfaces and industrial geometry; this watch applies those codes to Hublot’s core Unico platform.

The 42mm case in satin-finished and polished black ceramic revisits the modular construction and strong geometry of the Big Bang with a pared-back, monochrome look. A satin-finished black ceramic bezel is secured by six H-shaped black-plated titanium screws, while sapphire crystals with anti-reflective treatment front and back offer clear views into the movement and reinforce the technical character.

The honeycomb signature

The honeycomb motif is central to Ross’s contribution, a structural pattern seen in his sculptures and earlier SR_A editions, now expressed in a newly developed rubber strap. This black structured honeycomb strap, created expressly for the Big Bang Unico SR_A, is lightweight, ergonomic and architectural, echoing the industrial character of the series.

Water-resistant to 100m and measuring 14.50mm in thickness, the watch is secured by a black ceramic and black-plated titanium deployant buckle clasp and features Hublot’s “One-Click” system for fast strap changes. The all-black execution enhances the stealth impression while retaining practical, daily-wear performance.

The HUB1280 Unico, revealed

The matte black skeleton dial highlights the mechanical architecture of the HUB1280 Unico movement, with the column wheel at 6 o’clock and the open chronograph mechanism deliberately exposed. For Hublot, the Unico is both a power source and a defining visual signature, and the SR_A treatment accentuates that role.

The self-winding HUB1280 calibre combines a Swiss silicon lever escapement, 354 components and 43 jewels with a 4 Hz frequency and an approximate 72-hour power reserve. Its integrated flyback chronograph, precise to 1/8th of a second, allows instant reset and restart, and the movement incorporates several patented innovations, including dual oscillating clutches, an anti-trembling system and a “zero friction” ratchet wheel blocker; each movement is tested under the Chronofiable® protocol for performance and reliability.

Why it matters

The Big Bang Unico SR_A crystallises Hublot’s strategy of fusing industrial design, contemporary culture and technical watchmaking into a single, coherent object. By pairing Samuel Ross’s SR_A language with the Unico calibre in a 200-piece series, the Manufacture brings an avant-garde aesthetic into a more accessible Big Bang format, reinforcing its position at the crossroads of design innovation and high-performance chronograph engineering.
