Rolex SailGP Championship Returns to Geneva for 2026 Season

Geneva as a Racing Ground

Lake Geneva presents conditions found nowhere else on the 2026 calendar. Freshwater alters the behaviour of the foiling F50 catamarans: greater buoyancy reduces the margin for error, and the fleet must adapt its setup and tactics accordingly. Rolex Testimonee Hannah Mills, strategist for the Emirates GBR SailGP Team, described last year’s event as “truly memorable” and confirmed that racing in fresh water “creates an unusual challenge for the fleet” given how differently the boats handle compared to salt water.

The setting amplifies that challenge. Near the Swiss city’s Jet d’Eau, the racing backdrop is as demanding visually as it is technically, placing the championship’s most advanced hardware against one of Europe’s most immediately recognisable urban waterfronts.

Format, Standings and the Road to Abu Dhabi

Split fleet racing, introduced in July ahead of the Portsmouth event, has sharpened the competitive dynamic. Teams must now finish in the top two of their group to reach the four-boat final, compressing the window for error across every sequence. Tom Slingsby, driver for the BONDS Flying Roos and holder of more than 100 fleet race wins, put the precision required plainly: “There are 41 sequences in a manoeuvre that need to happen in perfect synchronization, and if one person is a fraction out of time, it impacts everything that follows.”

Australia leads Spain by 17 points. The Grand Final in Abu Dhabi closes the season, and Geneva carries full championship weight.

Rolex’s Commitment to Sailing

Rolex’s association with sailing traces to 1958, when the Geneva-based watchmaker formed a partnership with the New York Yacht Club.
