Design and Automotive Language

The cushion-shaped case, grooved corners, and mushroom pushers of the Top Time B01 Tribute to Aston Martin DB5 are a direct recall of the original Top Time ref. 2002 from the 1960s. At 41 mm across and 13.80 mm thick, the proportions are generous without crossing into sports-watch territory. The “squircle” subdials — softened squares that sit between round and rectangular — mirror the look of the DB5’s dashboard gauges, a detail that rewards close attention.

The wooden rehaut ring is the most distinctive touch. It references the DB5’s timber steering wheel and gives the dial architecture a warmth that polished steel alone cannot provide. The hand-coloured gradient leather straps in brown calfskin with beige lining extend the automotive reference to the wrist, capturing the depth of fine-grain upholstery. “This chronograph blends form with true function,” says Pablo Widmer, Breitling’s Head of Product Design. “As with the Aston Martin DB5, its beauty lies in its lines, materials, and finishings.”

Movement and Materials

Breitling Manufacture Caliber 01 drives all three editions without variation. The movement is self-winding, beats at 28,800 vibrations per hour, and its column-wheel and vertical clutch architecture deliver the clean start-stop action that chronograph collectors expect from a COSC-certified calibre. The approximately 70-hour power reserve is practical for a weekend away in Dubai or Riyadh without resetting.

Through the sapphire caseback, the rotor is engraved with the Aston Martin name and finished in rhodium plate on the steel editions or 18ct red gold on the top model. The 18ct red gold case pairs with a dial cut from natural onyx, a material Breitling uses here for the first time. The stone’s depth and surface variation ensure that no two of the 250 numbered pieces will read identically in different light.

Heritage and the Bond Moment

The connection between Breitling and Aston Martin has a specific historical anchor: a Top Time ref. 2002 on Sean Connery’s wrist in Thunderball (1965), worn in the same frame as the DB5. It was the first Q-modified watch in the James Bond series. That single scene placed two brands within the same visual grammar of speed and precision, and the 2026 editions build directly on that specific reference rather than trading in generic nostalgia.

Georges Kern, CEO of House of Brands, frames it clearly: “The Aston Martin DB5 is one of those rare designs that never fades. It still feels as relevant today as it did in the 1960s. With this Top Time, we capture that sense of timeless style.” Marek Reichman, Executive Vice President and Chief Creative Officer at Aston Martin, adds that the collaboration “allowed us to exchange ideas in a way that felt both natural and ambitious.”

Edition Comparison for the Collector

The three editions are structurally identical in movement and dimensions, but occupy different positions in a collection. The stainless steel version (ref. AB0178121G1X1), at 1,022 pieces, is the most accessible entry and the one closest in character to the original ref. 2002. The steel and platinum edition (ref. PB0178121B1X1, 315 pieces) adds the visual weight of a platinum bezel against a high-gloss black lacquered dial, a combination suited to the GCC preference for contrast and presence at the wrist.

The 18ct red gold model (ref. RB0178131B1X1, 250 numbered pieces) stands apart by material and scarcity. The onyx dial means no two watches share exactly the same stone pattern, giving it a case for long-term collectibility that the steel editions, however refined, cannot match. For collectors in the Gulf region who follow the Watches and Wonders calendar and track limited-run collaborations closely, the onyx edition is the version that warrants the most immediate attention.
