MING

MING was founded in Kuala Lumpur in 2017 by a small group led by the photographer and collector Ming Thein, and became one of the fastest-rising independent brands of its decade. Its signature is the layered dial: sapphire elements stacked so that markers, text and depth appear to float. The brand designs in Malaysia and has its watches built in Switzerland.

The Layered Sapphire Dial

MING dials print and coat on multiple sapphire planes, producing legibility and depth effects a single printed surface cannot achieve. Combined with unusually thin lugs and tightly controlled typography, the approach gave the brand a recognisable identity from its first reference, the 17.01, in 2017. Later collections extended it to complications, skeletonisation and luminous treatments.

An Independent Built on Design

MING works with established Swiss partners in La Chaux-de-Fonds rather than claiming in-house movement construction, concentrating its own effort on design, case architecture and dial technology. Series are limited and sold directly, and demand has consistently exceeded supply. The brand is frequently cited as evidence that a serious independent can now emerge from outside the traditional watchmaking countries.
