A Floor in Rome

The Bvlgari Divas’ Dream collection begins not in an atelier, but on a floor.

The Baths of Caracalla, built between 206 and 216 AD by Emperor Septimius Severus and completed by his son, once accommodated sixteen hundred bathers at a time. The walls are largely gone. But the polychrome mosaic floors survive — and among their repeating geometric patterns is a fan-shaped motif, inspired by the ginkgo leaf, that radiates outward in precise symmetrical arcs. It is geometric without rigidity, decorative without excess, and formally balanced in a way that has remained legible across nearly two millennia.

Bvlgari’s designers returned to those floors and read them as a design brief. The fan motif became a modular jewellery element: a single unit renderable in gold, settable with diamonds or coloured gemstones, and repeatable across necklaces, bracelets, earrings, rings, and watches in a visual rhythm that mirrors the original mosaics. Within the Bvlgari jewellery collection, no other design decision has proved as generative.

The Making of a Motif

Each fan tapers from a broad arc to a fine point, reading simultaneously as architectural and natural — structured and leaf-like at once.

That duality is the collection’s defining quality, and it has sustained the Divas’ Dream’s relevance across multiple creative reinterpretations. Bvlgari treats the fan not as a fixed template but as a compositional canvas whose fundamental geometry stays constant while its material expression changes entirely. Mother-of-pearl gives each fan a luminous glow shifting between pink, white, and silver. Coloured gemstones — rubellite, malachite, turquoise, amethyst, sapphires, emeralds, chrysoprase, tanzanite, coral — each introduce a distinct chromatic register while maintaining the motif’s coherence. Pavé diamonds produce what the press release describes as “pure light, shaped into ancient geometry.” The Divas’ Dream Mosaica series goes further still, rendering the fan through a gradient of individually selected stones arranged from dark to light within a single element, directly referencing the polychrome construction of the Caracalla originals.

In 2015, Bvlgari moved beyond creative debt and into cultural stewardship: the Maison financed the full restoration of the Caracalla polychrome floor mosaics — the very panels that had generated the collection. Specialist craftsmen replaced individual tiles in a two-phase project whose patience and precision were not unlike the work of Bvlgari’s own gemologists. The restoration completed, as the Maison framed it, a circle in which Roman architecture inspired Roman jewellery, and Roman jewellery gave back to Roman architecture. It is a commitment with few precedents among luxury houses — comparable in spirit to the cultural patronage associated with maisons such as Chopard or Van Cleef & Arpels.

The Collection in Use

The 2026 expansion adds seven new creations, and not one of them revises the fan.

Richly textured chains, softly rounded cabochon gemstones, and pavé diamonds create what Bvlgari describes as “a striking dialogue between matte and brilliance, echoing the interplay of light and shadow found in the Caracalla mosaics themselves.” For the wearer, this translates to pieces that carry visual weight without physical heaviness — a balance that makes the collection practical across formal and semi-formal contexts alike.

The name Divas’ Dream places the collection in a further cultural frame: the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma has staged its summer season outdoors against the backdrop of the Caracalla Baths for decades, meaning the very mosaics that shaped the jewellery have simultaneously served as a stage set for the great opera divas. In the present day, that lineage extends to Zendaya, Anne Hathaway, Lisa of BLACKPINK, and Priyanka Chopra Jonas — each of whom has worn the collection publicly.

What makes the Divas’ Dream unusual within fine jewellery is the stability of its design language combined with the restlessness of its chromatic exploration. The fan motif has not been updated, simplified, or modernised. Eighteen centuries old, it shows no sign of exhausting its creative potential.
