TUDOR Northflag Returns with GMT and Master Chronometer

The TUDOR Northflag is back with Calibre MT5652-U, GMT function, and METAS Master Chronometer certification. Priced at CHF 4,500 in 40mm steel.

The 1950s Wrist That Started It All

On the ice sheet of North Greenland in the early 1950s, members of the British North Greenland Expedition wore TUDOR watches for two consecutive years under conditions that few instruments survive. TUDOR’s press materials describe this as the moment that cemented the brand’s tool-watch reputation — documented, field-tested, and unrepeatable. The name “Northflag” directly references that expedition, with “North” as a literal geographical marker rather than a branding abstraction.

When the first Northflag arrived in 2015, it carried two other firsts: the brand’s initial Manufacture Calibre (the MT5621), and TUDOR’s first open caseback. A watch named for exploration became, quietly, an engineering milestone for the manufacture.

From MT5621 to MT5652-U: What Actually Changed

Calibre MT5652-U adds the GMT function without resorting to a module stacked above the base movement — a distinction TUDOR describes as fundamental to its movement architecture philosophy, and one that watchmaking purists typically note on first examination. The movement runs at 28,800 bph, carries 28 jewels, and uses a non-magnetic silicon balance spring maintained by a traversing bridge with two-point anchoring.

METAS certification requires the fully cased movement to run within 0/+5 seconds daily, resist magnetic fields up to 15,000 gauss, and achieve both its stated waterproofness (100 metres) and its stated power reserve (65 hours). Against COSC’s -4/+6 seconds standard and TUDOR’s own internal -2/+4 seconds benchmark, the Master Chronometer tolerance is the tightest of the three. The tungsten monobloc openworked rotor, with its laser radial grooves and sand-blasted details, is visible through the domed sapphire caseback — the same caseback format the original 2015 Northflag pioneered.

Design Continuity and the 1973 Ranger II

The visual template for both Northflag generations traces to TUDOR’s 1973 Ranger II — specifically its integrated bracelet construction and black dial with large Arabic numerals. On this second-generation piece, those numerals are rendered in monobloc luminous ceramic, a material upgrade from the original. Arrow-shaped 24-hour and hour hands work alongside an angular seconds hand and a baton minutes hand; the 24-hour hand is the new functional addition that justifies the rehaut’s double graduation, angled at 45 degrees for legibility in low light.

The T-fit clasp, finished with ceramic ball bearings, provides five micro-adjustment positions across an 8mm window — a practical consideration for Gulf wearers whose wrists can shift in diameter across temperature extremes. The case measures 48.8mm lug to lug, which places it comfortably on most wrists without the bracelet’s integrated geometry feeling constrained. For collectors who followed the Northflag at Watches and Wonders, the return to production at CHF 4,500 positions this as one of the stronger value propositions in TUDOR’s current GMT offering.
