GERALD GENTA
Born in Geneva in 1931, Gérald Genta is universally regarded as one of the most influential figures in the history of watchmaking. A visionary designer and horological thinker, he collaborated with the most prestigious names in haute horlogerie, creating timepieces that have since become enduring collector icons. In 1969, he founded his own eponymous brand to free himself from convention and explore watchmaking as mechanical art—where design, complexity, and narrative were inseparable.
Radical Design
Gérald Genta watches are defined by bold, unconventional aesthetics. Sculptural cases, geometric and architectural forms, integrated bracelets, asymmetry, and layered dials challenged the visual codes of Swiss watchmaking. His designs were instantly recognizable and deliberately daring, introducing a visual freedom that reshaped expectations of what a luxury watch could be.
Lasting Influence
Beyond design, the brand was distinguished by technical sophistication, featuring complications such as minute repeaters, jumping hours, retrograde displays, perpetual calendars, and tourbillons. Gérald Genta also embraced a playful spirit, famously introducing high-end watches featuring Disney characters rendered with horological seriousness. Later acquired by Bulgari and now part of LVMH’s watchmaking heritage, the Gérald Genta name endures as a symbol of creativity, innovation, and the very invention of modern luxury sports watch culture.
