Boucheron’s Reversible Question Mark Necklace: Two Faces, One Icon

First Impressions

• Forty-four carats of tourmalines — set in white gold with metallic foil behind each stone — define the front face of the reversible Goutte Question Mark necklace, available in rubellite, green tourmaline, and tanzanite.
• The reverse presents an entirely different character: custom-cut rock crystal and pavé diamonds, cool and transparent where the front face is saturated and warm.
• The clasp-free mechanism, unchanged in principle since 1879, now incorporates a tailor-made reversible system that took the atelier several years to perfect.
• Design lineage traces directly to an 1884 Cornelius Vanderbilt commission held in the Boucheron archives.

Case, Setting and Finishing

The clasp-free structure of the Question Mark dates to 1879, when Frédéric Boucheron drew a necklace held by an internal leaf-spring mechanism so finely engineered it was almost invisible. That same principle governs the new Goutte: the piece wraps the neck asymmetrically, held by internal tension rather than a fastening. What the atelier added — and what took several years to resolve — was the capacity to flip the entire necklace and have every component sit correctly against the skin from both orientations.

CEO Hélène Poulit-Duquesne has spoken directly to the difficulty: “It took us a long time in our atelier to make it happen because, technically, it was complicated. When you reverse it, it has to have exactly the right sizing and fitting.” The mechanism operates in a single gesture yet remains stable once turned. Both faces must protect their stones regardless of which side is worn outward.

Stone Artistry

Metallic foil placed behind each tourmaline intensifies the stones’ natural saturation, producing depth that an unenhanced setting cannot achieve. The three colour variations — blazing rubellite, intense green tourmaline, deep blue tanzanite — each carry the same 44-carat total weight and the same white gold setting, chosen to preserve chromatic neutrality.

Flip the necklace and the foil-backed colour disappears entirely. The reverse is set with custom-cut rock crystal, the colourless variety of quartz prized for its ice-like clarity, accented by pavé diamonds that scatter light in sharp, bright flashes. The contrast between the two faces is total: saturated warmth on one side, cool transparency on the other.

Heritage and Lineage

The Goutte’s flowing, teardrop-like arrangement of stones draws from an 1884 piece commissioned by Cornelius Vanderbilt, one of the Gilded Age’s most significant patrons of Boucheron. The commission’s graphic restraint — confident silhouette over decorative accumulation — is legible in the new necklace’s structure. The French word goutte (drop) describes precisely how the stones cascade: liquid rather than ornamental.

Six new Question Mark interpretations have been unveiled alongside the reversible Goutte, including the Lierre de Paris in emeralds and rhodium-plated gold, which references Paul Legrand’s original 1879 ivy drawing, and the Plume de Paon, which returns to the Maison’s historic peacock feather motif. The reversible Goutte sits at the centre of this broader campaign marking 146 years of the Question Mark’s defining principle: a necklace worn without assistance, expressing the independence of the woman who wears it.
