Hanhart releases the 417 ES Steve McQueen Limited Edition No. 1 — 300 pieces, 39 mm, flyback calibre AMT5100 M, Shell Cordovan strap. EUR 2,890.
An Editor’s Read
- Limited to 300 pieces worldwide, the 417 ES Steve McQueen Limited Edition No. 1 pairs a 39 mm stainless steel case — matching the proportions of McQueen’s personal original — with McQueen’s own signature printed on the matte black dial, approved and proposed by his grandchildren Chase and Madison McQueen.
- The hand-wound Sellita AMT5100 M provides flyback function: a single press resets and instantly restarts the running chronograph.
- Shell Cordovan sourced from Italian tannery Comipel, vegetable-tanned and drawn from the horse’s hindquarters, replicates the dark brown cuff strap McQueen wore in archival photographs.
- Price is EUR 2,890 including VAT; reference H705L.210-2110 (size M) and H705L.210-2112 (size L).

At the 1964 International Six Days Trial in Erfurt, McQueen raced under the alias “Harvey Mushman” to sidestep bans imposed by film producers — yet his riding style betrayed him in the paddock. On his wrist throughout: his personal Hanhart 417 ES. Hanhart states that numerous photographs document this connection, and the maison has treated it as the precise brief for this edition.
Movement & Materials
The flyback calibre AMT5100 M beats at 28,800 vph with 23 jewels and a minimum power reserve of 58 hours. Flyback in practice means a single pusher press resets and restarts — no two-step sequence. Hanhart regulates every movement in Gütenbach to a daily rate of 0 to +8 seconds, averaged across all positions; a losing rate in the main positions is not permitted.
Despite a highly domed sapphire crystal, the case stands at just 13.3 mm. Water resistance reaches 10 bar, a substantial improvement over the historical 417 ES, whose cockpit origins gave it limited tolerance for daily wear. The bidirectional, click-free fluted bezel and the HyCeram red pusher are carried over directly from the standard production piece.

Heritage & Lineage
Hanhart created the 417 ES in the mid-1950s as a pilot’s chronograph for the German Bundeswehr. The abbreviation ES denotes Edelstahl, German for stainless steel. The 39 mm case diameter of this edition mirrors that original precisely.
The red pusher carries its own provenance. Legend holds that a pilot’s wife painted his Hanhart’s pusher with red nail polish so he would think of her on every flight. The signal colour also served a practical function: preventing accidental actuation in the cockpit. Both threads are acknowledged in the edition’s box, which contains a bottle of red nail polish alongside the booklet, numbered plaque, and the limitation card modelled on McQueen’s 1964 FIM racing licence — itself auctioned by Bonhams in 2009 for USD 42,700 including buyer’s premium.
