MORITZ GROSSMANN

Moritz Grossmann revives the name of Karl Moritz Grossmann, the nineteenth-century Glashütte watchmaker who was a leading proponent of the German School of Watchmaking and lectured there himself. Christine Hutter acquired the rights to the name and established the manufacture in Glashütte in November 2008, building its own movements in the tradition Grossmann helped codify.

A Manufacture in Glashütte

The house designs and produces its calibres in-house, following Saxon construction conventions — three-quarter plate, screwed gold chatons, a hand-engraved balance cock, untreated German silver — executed to modern tolerances. Its own hand-setting system uses a separate pusher so the crown never disturbs the movement while the time is adjusted. Details of that kind, rather than complications, define the collection.

Reviving a Name With Substance

Unlike revivals that borrow only a signature, Moritz Grossmann rebuilt an actual manufacture in the town where the original worked, and its output reflects Grossmann’s own writings on construction and finishing. Production is limited and the collections stay classical. The result is one of the few German independents operating at full manufacture level outside the industry’s largest groups.
