Born to build the ideal watch
In 1960, Seiko’s Suwa factory set out to answer a simple question: what would the ideal watch look like if precision, durability and legibility were the only priorities? The answer was the first Grand Seiko, and the question has driven the brand ever since.
In 1967 the 44GS gave that pursuit a visual language. Designer Taro Tanaka’s Grammar of Design demanded flat surfaces and crisp edges polished to a mirror free of any distortion — achieved through Zaratsu blade polishing, a technique Grand Seiko craftsmen still learn over years. It is why a Grand Seiko catches light the way no other watch does.
Spring Drive, a third way of keeping time
In 1999, after two decades of development, Grand Seiko introduced Spring Drive: a movement powered purely by a mainspring but regulated electronically, accurate to roughly one second a day, its seconds hand gliding in perfect silence rather than ticking. No other manufacture makes anything comparable.
Around it sit the Hi-Beat 36000 mechanical calibres and the 9F quartz movements, each made end to end in the brand’s own studios — mechanical watchmaking in Shizukuishi in northern Japan, Spring Drive and quartz in Shinshu in the mountains of Nagano, whose winter landscape inspired the celebrated Snowflake dial. Since 2017 Grand Seiko has been fully independent from Seiko, with its own name alone on the dial.
Grand Seiko in the Gulf, and who it is for
In the Gulf, Grand Seiko is the connoisseur’s step-up: the buyer who already owns the obvious Swiss names and wants finishing and precision that specialists rank with far more expensive watchmaking. The brand has invested in the region accordingly, with a dedicated boutique presence in Dubai’s flagship malls, and demand in both Saudi Arabia and the UAE is led by exactly the models that define the brand — the Snowflake, the White Birch and the Evolution 9 collection.
