The P.980 calibre, 12½ lignes in diameter and 4.2mm thick, carries a traversing balance wheel bridge that Panerai credits with improved stability and performance accuracy. Pull the crown and a stop-seconds function halts the seconds hand for precise synchronisation, a direct carry-over from the military specification requirement. Power reserve is three days; frequency is 28,800 alternations per hour. The movement has 177 components, 23 jewels and an Incabloc® anti-shock device, and each watch passes six-position chronometric testing.
On the PAM01714, DLC (diamond-like carbon) is deposited via Plasma-Assisted Chemical Vapor Deposition onto the steel case and bezel. Composed mainly of carbon, the coating offers high hardness with resistance to wear, abrasion and corrosion, and produces the deep black finish that sharpens the 90s-inspired lines on that reference.
The dial across all three models is a single printed plate. Super-LumiNova® is applied over the graphics in a slightly raised layer, giving Arabic numerals a subtly convex, three-dimensional finish in low light. No date is fitted; small seconds appear at 9 o’clock, following Panerai’s functional convention originating with the Italian Navy’s frogmen.
